Our patch runs from the Lizard to Newquay, and Newquay is the north-coast end of it. It is also the town on our list where the weather does the most to a finished surface. This is the Atlantic side of the county: the rain arrives sideways, it arrives often, and open ground has to be built to move serious volumes of water rather than hold it. Falls, drainage and permeability are decided before a material is chosen, not bolted on once the puddles appear.
The run up from Porthleven is the longest we make regularly, out to the A30 and back down the A392 into the town, which is why Newquay work is planned as a proper run with the machinery, the crew and the material brought up together.
That suits the work the town generates anyway. Larger domestic drives, parking areas, yards, hard standings and site preparation on the newer plots towards St Columb Minor and Quintrell Downs, alongside the tighter older streets running down to Porth, where the ground falls to the beach and surface water gets somewhere in a hurry. Holiday parks, hospitality sites and trade premises make up much of the rest.
North-coast work is bigger and wetter than most of the patch, and the service order reflects that.
