Driveways and patios in Redruth sit on ground that was laid out long before anyone thought about where the water off a hard surface would go. It shows up in the work. Around Fore Street and the older terraces the ground has been raised, patched and re-laid over generations, so levels have crept, boundaries have moved and yards drain towards the building instead of away from it.
Out through Trewirgie, Lanner and St Day the plots get bigger and the gardens have been progressively hard surfaced, which puts more water on the ground and leaves it fewer places to soak. Under Carn Brea and up towards Illogan the ground turns heavy and holds most of what lands on it.
So a Redruth job starts with the levels and the falls, not with the material. We set out where the water is going first, put the drainage in while the ground is open, then build the base and lay the surface on top. Done the other way round, a new drive simply sends water at a wall.
