Helston is three miles up the B3304 from our base in Porthleven, and it is the town we are in most weeks. Mike Wherry spent decades laying drives and paving concentrated here, so we already know what this town does to a job.
Helston falls. Coinagehall Street drops its whole length to the bottom of the town with open channels running either side of it, and that gradient carries on into the yards and back gardens behind the older terraces off Meneage Street. Almost every drive and patio here is a levels and water problem before it is a surface choice. Get the falls wrong and rain that should leave the property arrives at a back door instead.
So we start with where the water goes. Under permitted development rules in England, a new or replacement front driveway of more than five square metres has to use a permeable surface, or send its run-off to a soakaway or permeable ground inside the boundary, or else it needs planning permission.
Past the town the ground changes fast. Towards Wendron and Sithney it is heavy, agricultural and holds water. Towards Gweek and the Helford it is narrow lanes, smallholdings and off-mains plots. In the centre it is granite, slate and shared entries.
Helston asks for drives and paving more than anything else, and on ground that moves water about. These are the jobs we are called out for most here.
